Chorus Overview

Historical Snapshot
Our chorus was formed almost seventy years ago in Toms River, New Jersey and we are honored today to be the only Ocean County Chapter of the International Barbershop Harmony Society. With its headquarters in Nashville, TN, the Society today is composed of about 14,000 singers throughout the United States and Canada who are members of one (or more) of the nearly 700 member choruses at this time.

Our Purpose
The Oceanaires Chorus has a dual purpose. First of all, we offer a quality recreational singing opportunity and the experience of camaraderie with men of good character who enjoy singing. Second, our purpose is to blend the current listener popularity of acappella singing groups with our historical persuasion to help preserve the musical art form and style of traditional American barbershop harmony singing. The result is the presence of a great group of local men whose hobby is acappella singing of familiar Broadway, Americana, spiritual and contemporary songs to a variety of audiences in northern Ocean County, NJ.

Recent Performances
Over the past five years, our congenial chorus has been invited to perform at various Ocean County civic events, local organization group functions, and worthwhile fund-raising endeavors. In addition, the chorus is always exhilarated to produce its annual public performance to typically near sell out audiences. After hearing a performance, the men of The Oceanaires Chorus hope you will agree that their volunteer chorus continues to be a positive valued contributor to the musical arts in Ocean County.

Come Sing with Us or Have Us Sing for You
We have the ongoing ambition to grow our chorus with new members of all ages. Men who like to sing and come visit one of our rehearsals can visit us any Tuesday night in the downstairs general-purpose room of the New Life Church at 700 Main Street in Toms River, NJ. To sing with our chorus you don’t need to have prior chorus experience and the ability to read sheet music is helpful but not required. Also, if you would like to learn more about possibly asking our chorus to sing for you or an organization you are part of, please contact Al Wagner at 732-793-8128. He can answer any questions you may have.
